Are We There Yet?

So far in my life I've been on four road trips to Montana, two to Maine, and one to Texas. Almost all of these have been related to summer camp or work experiences, and I have distinct memories of each one. It will be awhile before we embark on trips of such distance with our kids, but that doesn't keep me from thinking about fun summer road trip ideas and destinations. If this summer has you taking a road trip as a family and you haven't left yet, I recently came across a few quick and easy ideas that you might find useful for on-the-go entertainment.

Story Tellers- As a family, make up a story.  The first person's story has to start with an A, the second person's a B, and so on until you get through the whole alphabet.

Spot the ______.- Try to spot a variety of things, such as a certain animal, a sign starting with a certain letter or including a certain word, a particular color car, etc.  For example: Spot the blue car, yellow house, brown horse, road sign including the word "caution," and a restaurant with a red sign. You could decide what the objects are as a family, take turns choosing them, or make cards ahead of time with names/pictures of the objects listed.

I'm an Animal- One person thinks of an animal and the others ask yes or no questions to guess what it is.

As you head out, consider starting a new family tradition by saying a blessing before you go on your trip. I found the following blessing for a family trip at www.vibrantfaithathome.org

God of wonder, as we prepare to leave on this family trip, be with us in a special
way. Help us to fully enter into our time together, not wondering what’s going on
back home or at work, but being present to each other and to the place(s) we are
visiting. Open our eyes and hearts to the people and places we encounter on our
travels. Help us to be kind, compassionate, and patient with each other and with
all those whom we meet. Keep us and all travelers safe and away from harm. Let
us remember that this time together as a family is sacred. Amen.
