Spring Is in the Air!

I couldn't be happier that the days are getting longer and warmer and signs of spring are finally starting to show.  For me, there is something completely rejuvenating about being able to go outside with the kids to burn off some energy, breathe in some fresh air, and not have it sting your nostrils when you do.  Now, instead of preventing frostbite, the biggest challenge is waiting long enough to plant the garden!

With spring on my mind, I found this activity and thought it was a great way of getting outdoors, recognizing God in our everyday, and welcoming this new season as a family.  The activity comes from www.vibrantfaithathome.org.  You can find a a link to the activity here.

Welcoming Spring

What's Needed
Bible
Time and place for taking a walk outdoors
Internet-connected device for viewing Bambi and Signs of Spring.

A Few Things to Do in Advance
Preview Bambi and Signs of Spring.
Mark your Bible to Genesis 1:14-15, 18; Psalm 150:1-6.

What to Do
  1. Say this prayer aloud to begin: Dear God, thank you for every season of the year. We’re especially happy that spring has arrived. Be with us as we enjoy your creation. Amen.
  2. Ask someone to read aloud Genesis 1:14-15, 18 from your Bible. Encourage discussion about why God thought it important to create the seasons.
  3. Together, view Bambi and Signs of Spring. Encourage children to point out signs of spring on the video, such as grass appearing, animals coming out of hibernation, trees budding, and flowers blooming.
  4. Take a walk outdoors. Bring your Bible or the text at the end of this activity. As you walk, invite family members to point out any signs of spring they see. Ask each family member to tell what makes him or her happy about spring’s arrival.
  5. Celebrate spring by jumping up and down, running, rolling in the grass, clapping, or doing some other type of motion that family members think is celebratory.
  6. Huddle together and have someone read aloud Psalm 150:1-6 from your Bible or the text at the end of this activity. Imagine that these words are celebrating God’s gift of the seasons, especially spring!
Psalm 150:1-6
     1 Praise the Lord!
        Praise God in his sanctuary;
        praise him in his mighty heavens!
     2 Praise him for his mighty deeds;
        praise him according to his excellent greatness!
     3 Praise him with trumpet sound;
        praise him with lute and harp!
     4 Praise him with tambourine and dance;
        praise him with strings and pipe!
     5 Praise him with sounding cymbals;
        praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
     6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
        Praise the Lord!
