Sandcastles and Faith

This is the season for playing outside, building sandcastles, and being wowed by God's beautiful creation.  Our kids love playing in the sandbox and building sand structures.  When I found this activity on Vibrant Faith's website, I was reminded once again that just about anything we do can be related to our faith and can be used as a way of talking about faith with our kids and family.
This activity uses a summer day playing in the sand to explore Jesus' parable of building a house on rock and not on sand.  With Jesus' help, and because of what Jesus has done for us, our faith is solid and helps us through times when other things around us feel less stable/secure.
The song that is listed is one I'm familiar with from camp, but if you and your family have not heard it before, there is a link to a YouTube version of it so you can familiarize yourselves with it.
Activity Plan
  1. Before your trip to the beach or sandbox, read aloud Jesus' parable of The Wise Builder (Matthew 7:24-27) from your Bible or children's Bible. Another way to tell the story is through song. Play this YouTube video and sing along as a family:  The Wise Man Built His House.
    1. The wise man built his house upon the rock (3x)
    2. And the rains came tumbling down.
    3. Oh...
    4. the rains came down as the floods came up (3x)
    5. And the wise man's house stood firm.
    6. The foolish man built his house upon the sand (3x)
    7. And the rains came tumbling down.
    8. Oh...
    9. the rains came down as the floods came up (3x)
    10. And the foolish man's house went splat.
    11. So build your life on the Lord, Jesus Christ (3x)
    12. And the blessing will come down.
    13. Oh...
    14. the blessings come down as the prayers go up (3x)
    15. So build your life on the Lord, Jesus Christ.
  2. Gather your sand toys and towels and head out to the beach or sandbox. While children are playing in the sand, invite them to act out the Bible story. Use an upside down bucket for the "rock." Build a small sandcastle on the sand and one on the bucket. Pour water at the base of the sandcastle on the sand and at the base of the bucket. What happens?
  3. Comment that though sandcastles come and go because of rain or tide, God's love and Jesus' help can never be washed away from us.
  4. Pray aloud:
    1. Creator God, thanks for sun and rain. Thanks for time to play. Thanks for stone and sand. Thanks for Jesus. Amen.
